Videocon d2h is presently testing its next generation connected STBs, which the company is planning to launch in the market within next two months. The connected box will have installed OTT and some utility applications that user can access with the existing wi-fi or broadband connection on television sets.

A highly-placed source in the company told Economic Times in a statement that Netflix is the first player to sign up a contract with Videocon d2h for the coming soon connected STBs. Videocon d2h has already started the integration and as the part of the deal, the remotes of STBs will have a special Netflix button.

In the western countries, the consumption of Netflix is predominantly on the connected TV sets, so the low penetration of connected devices and broadband has restricted the OTT consumption to the small screens in India, especially mobile phone devices.

The VP of product at Netflix, Todd Yellin, told Economic Times that globally two third of all hours of streaming are on TV. India is one of the three places where the consumption of Netflix is more on smartphone or tablets rather than on TV. Netflix Com can be used for any query or in case of any difficulty.

The experts at the industry feels that the move is pretty much in sync with what all the DTH player are trying to do, to offer services in addition to traditional TV. This will also distinguish Videocon d2h from other cable services.

It is a good fit for both the brands as doe DTH player it will mean a new revenue stream and greater engagement with his subscriber. For the OTT player, it will mean reduction in customer acquisition cost and more ways to push content.

People with the direct knowledge told Economic Times that Videocon d2h will offer the new box for Rs2490 for the existing customers, while the new customers will need to spend the amount of Rs3490. The new STBs will also have Hotstar and Sony Liv, while the talks are on with Viacom to get its service Voot on this platform. Videocond2h has also done partnership with BookMyShow and Zomato for the ticket booking and food delivery services via DTH.
